Over 62 kilos of cocaine, worth €2.3 million, were discovered in a banana container from Ecuador at the Port of Thessaloniki. Authorities intensify crackdown on international drug trafficking networks.

A major blow to international drug trafficking networks was delivered at the Port of Thessaloniki, where customs authorities uncovered over 62 kilos of cocaine hidden inside a container carrying fresh bananas from Ecuador.

The operation was conducted by inspectors of the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (IAPR) during inspections at the First Customs Office of Thessaloniki. Utilizing a mobile X-ray scanner, customs officers detected 55 carefully concealed packages of cocaine hidden inside the cooling system of the container.

The container had arrived from Ecuador and was destined for Thessaloniki’s port. According to estimates, the seized cocaine has a street value of approximately €2.3 million.

Immediately after the discovery, customs officials collaborated with the Hellenic Police to confiscate the narcotics. Authorities have launched an extensive investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible.

This case is part of Greece’s ongoing efforts to combat international organized crime and drug trafficking. Law enforcement agencies continue to strengthen border inspections and intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling smuggling networks operating across Europe.
