Greek authorities have issued warnings following a significant increase in seismic activity around the islands of Santorini, Ios, Amorgos, and Anafi.
Over the past few days, more than 550 earthquakes have been recorded in the Aegean Sea between Santorini and the nearby island of Amorgos. The strongest tremor, with a magnitude of 4.9, occurred early on February 4, 2025.
In response to the ongoing tremors, authorities have implemented several precautionary measures:
- School Closures: Schools on Santorini and neighboring islands, including Ios, Amorgos, and Anafi, have been closed until Friday to ensure the safety of students.
- Public Safety Advisories: Residents and tourists are advised to avoid large indoor gatherings, refrain from entering abandoned buildings, and stay clear of certain ports. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to drain swimming pools and remain vigilant.
- Emergency Services Deployment: Emergency crews, including fire and rescue personnel, have been dispatched to assist on the island.
The seismic activity has caused significant disruption, with many residents and tourists choosing to spend the night in their cars. Ferries and flights to and from the island are heavily booked, as individuals seek to leave amid concerns over potential larger quakes or volcanic activity.
Experts have clarified that the current seismic events are tectonic in nature and not related to volcanic activity. The region’s seismic activity is attributed to the convergence of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Greek authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are providing regular updates to ensure public safety.
