The Greek Ministry of Tourism is taking significant steps to enhance mountain tourism and revitalize the country’s mountainous regions. A new form of specialized tourism infrastructure has been established, called “Sustainable Mountain Tourism Destination.”
This initiative, formalized by Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni (Ministerial Decision 1020/2025), allows for the combined operation of a ski center, mountain refuge, and hotel accommodation within a single area, year-round. The decision was published in the Government Gazette.
Development of these “Sustainable Mountain Tourism Destinations” will align with regional spatial and urban planning frameworks, as well as any special protection regulations for areas and forestlands.
Mountain and winter tourism are key priorities for the Ministry of Tourism of Greece, contributing to enhanced competitiveness and improved quality of the country’s tourism infrastructure. This initiative complements the support program for ski centers through the Recovery Fund and recently enacted legislation enabling year-round operation. It’s part of a holistic strategy to develop mountain tourism and extend the tourist season.
The establishment of this new infrastructure aims to create a sustainable model for tourism development. This model will strengthen local economies, protect natural resources, and offer visitors authentic, high-quality tourism experiences.
The Greek Ministry of Tourism is committed to sustainable tourism development, highlighting the potential of Greece’s mountain destinations.
