Greece: Negotiations for the 2+2 Italian Bergamini-class frigates expected to conclude by April

According to statements by the Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias (March 8, 2026), the process for the Italian Bergamini-class (FREMM) frigates is in its final stretch.

Greece and Italy have signed since September 2025:

  • Letter of Intent for the acquisition of 2+2 Italian FREMM-type frigates, Bergamini class.
  • Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Naval Cooperation between the two countries.

Regarding the timeline, Minister Dendias expressed hope for:

  • Completion of negotiations by April 2026.
  • Immediate signing of the Contract thereafter.

A critical detail mentioned by the Minister of Defence is that “the FREMM frigates must also be capable of carrying the new generation ELSA missile, which will also be carried by the FDI HN (Belharra) frigates.”

“With the acquisition of the state-of-the-art Belharra and Bergamini frigates, within the framework of Agenda 2030, the Hellenic Navy has entered its New Era. It will be the strongest Navy in the history of modern Greece,” noted Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias in an interview with the newspaper “To Vima tis Kyriakis”.
