The Defense Cooperation Agreement between the Hellenic Republic and the Portuguese Republic was ratified by the Greek Parliament.

This Agreement aims to promote co-operation between Greece and Portugal concerning defence matters, within their competences, in accordance with their respective internal law and the international obligations undertaken by the two countries and on the basis of the principles of equality, reciprocity and mutual interest.

The co-operation between the Parties shall be developed in the following areas:

  1. Strategic Dialogue;
  2. Defence policy and military doctrine;
  3. EU Common Security and Defence Policy;
  4. Defence industries, technologies and equipment;
  5. Defence capabilities;
  6. Defence and military legislation;
  7. Planning and budgeting:
  8. Logistics and procurement;
  9. Armed forces organization within the fields of personnel, administration and logistics;
  10. Scientific and military health co-operation;
  11. Military education and training of military and civilian personnel;
  12. Military exercises;
  13. Military history, publications and museums;
  14. Military geography, geodesy, meteorology, topography and cartography;
  15. Peace, humanitarian and search and rescue operations;
  16. Environmental protection in the military locations;
  17. Social, sports and cultural activities;
  18. Cyber Defence;
  19. Military Intelligence Co-operation.

The co-operation between the Parties shall be carried out through:

  • Official visits and working meetings headed by high representatives of the Parties;
  • Exchange of experience between experts of the Parties in defence areas;
  • Exchange of observers to military exercises;
  • Exchange of technical, technological and industrial information and use of their capacities in areas of mutual interest, according to the national regulations of the Parties;
  • Meetings of representatives of military institutions;
  • Exchange of lecturers and attendance to courses, seminars, conferences and symposiums organised by the Parties;

The Defense Cooperation Agreement between the Hellenic Republic and the Portuguese Republic was signed in Lisbon on October 12, 2020 by the then Minister of National Defense, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, and his Portuguese counterpart, João Titterington Gomes Cravinho.
